Festive mood at Mohammad Naeem”s house.
‘You surely know the reason for this smile,’ he told The Hindu at Sarang House at Gurukambla, 22 km from here. The family has been excited ever since it heard from his employer that Mr. Naeem”s abductors had freed him and that he would join the family here later this week. Mr. Hussain said his son was expected to come to Mumbai via New Delhi in the next two or three days.
His wife Rafat Sultana and her three children are staying at her mother”s house at Kurla, Mumbai.
‘I heard the news from my father-in-law. The family is overjoyed,’ she said on the phone. Thanking the media for standing by the family in its hour of crisis, Ms. Rafat said she spoke to her husband. She was not sure about his travel plans. In all likelihood, he would come to Mumbai before proceeding to Mangalore.

Low-cost housing is about to open in Santa Paula.
But the family is moving into a new, affordable Santa Paula apartment complex, which will open its doors to residents this weekend. The complex was built through an unusual partnership of developers and the nonprofit Cabrillo Economic Development Corp.
‘All my life I have lived in Santa Paula, and I have never asked for anything,’ Emily Cantero said. ‘I never dreamed we would be moving into this kind of housing, but I am so grateful we can stay in Santa Paula and my husband will be able to quit his nighttime job and stay home more.’
35 families in complex
The Cantero family will join 34 other families at the 35-unit Courtyard by Harvard, which will provide housing for families who earn 30 to 60 percent of the area”s median income.
That means the monthly rent is as low as $413 for a one-bedroom apartment and as low as $1,032 for a three-bedroom apartment.

Freeland Lanes closes its doors after 50 years.
Simmons is leasing the building from Steve Myers.
Myers, owner of Sound Electric in Freeland, developed the new commercial buildings next door at the corner of Main Street and Harbor Avenue.
Myers said he was shocked at Simmons” decision to close.
‘I grew up on the island and have a history of going to the Freeland Lanes. They had pool tables in those days. That”s where we all learned how to play pool,’ Myers said.
‘Now there are many more things for people to do on the island,’ he added. ‘Bowling used to be more popular, but it”s tough to compete with video games, and everything else there is to do.’
South End bowling enthusiasts are sorry to see the bowling alley close. Nancy Nowlin, who helped plan bowling league play for Freeland Lanes, believes the lanes are a South End tradition that should be continued.

Acanthus montanus: an experimental evaluation of the antimicrobial.
This study was undertaken to experimentally evaluate the antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of the root extract as well as its effect on phagocytosis and specific cell-mediated immune response which may underlie the usefulness of the roots in treatment of furuncles.
Methods: The aqueous root extract (obtained by hot water maceration of the root powder) was studied for effects on the growth of clinically isolated strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.
The anti-inflammatory activity was investigated using acute topical edema of the mouse ear induced by xylene, acute paw edema induced by agar in rats, formaldehyde arthritis in rats, vascular permeability induced by acetic acid in mice and heat- and hypotonicity-induced haemolysis of ox red blood cells (RBCs).

Another body found.
The area where the latest body was found is full of large homes built on big wooded lots. Some homeowners keep horses on their property.
But Strathcona County is also infamous for being a dumping ground for murder victims, said criminologist Bill Pitt from the University of Alberta.
Since 1988, Pitt estimates, at least 30 bodies have been found in the area - particularly along Highway 14.
‘It”s a cemetery,’ he said.
Pitt noted that the latest body was found in a populated area surrounded by residential acreages.
That indicates a chilling element if the person died of foul play, he added.
‘The proximity to other individuals is brazen, arrogant, someone who feels untouchable,’ he said.
‘There may be more out there.’
RCMP major crimes division is investigating.

ReStore renewal.
The charity, which uses proceeds from the sale of salvaged materials to fund construction of affordable homes, was bursting at every corner in its old location at Avenue L South and 17th Street West. All sorts of donated and used materials, from windows and doors to toilets and floors, were spilling from shelves, stacked on the floor or heaped in other piles. Much more was stored in the outside yards where it was ruined by the weather.

Looking forward to the new, keeping tabs on the old.
Given the missing property last year, some staff members in the district took their most cherished school property home.
Heritage Elementary School librarian Shauna Leonard left with about 10 boxes of out-of-print books, including Gator Pie.
‘If the copy was lost, I would have to go to a rare bookstore to replace it,’ Leonard said. ‘The second-grade teachers take it to teach fractions.’
New measures
Last year, computers, projectors, digital cameras, musical instruments and sporting equipment disappeared. The equipment, stored in libraries, gymnasiums and specified classrooms, was never recovered.
To prevent a recurrence, Monaghan said, the locks were changed at an unnamed district building that will house computer equipment over the summer and the doors of semitrailers full of furniture and boxes will be backed up to one another in school parking lots to help prevent burglaries.

A home page that changed to Ask without asking.
Our Internet Explorer home page has changed to Ask.com and lists several porn sites in succession. I”ve tried everything, and the only thing that ‘worked’ was to disable the add-on Ask. I still can”t change the home page. Michele Dillavou It sounds as though you have fallen victim to a home page hijacker, either because you have missed a Windows Update or a hijacker has been installed with something else or by ’social engineering’ (where you were induced to click something without being informed what it would do). First, make sure you do not have the Ask toolbar installed. Restart your PC, close any browser windows, and run the Control Panel”s Add/Remove Programs applet. If there is an entry for the Ask.com Bar, click Change/Remove and uninstall it. Second, download and run SuperAntiSpyware, which will protect your home page setting.
